Like most people drawn to Savannah, Chris Meenan and Ericka Phillips (partners in business and life) fell in love with the port cityβs rich history, that seductive tapestry of customs and stories which reveals a deep lineage of flavors, cultural influences, societal forces and ideas.
Chris has spent many years learning how to integrate the excellence of French methods with his deep commitment to American regional food expressions, from his training in New Orleans and New Mexico to a lengthy and fruitful career in the fast-paced kitchens of New York City. Philosophically and practically everything is tied together in importance, from welcoming hospitality to the final plating, and Chris understands how restaurants play a unique role in cultivating community by connecting people and lifting up neighborhoods. Nowhere is that ideal more evident than in the memory of Dottie serving up a plate of fresh food from her own stove as a source of nourishment and an expression of love.
Erickaβs family, including Dottie, was part of the Great Migration North over 100 years ago seeking a new life and better opportunities, and she remembers the ways in which Dottie came to represent the joyful qualities of Southern life: her relationship to the land, growing food, staying connected to friends and family, helping others without a fuss, and making good, simply prepared meals from scratch using tried and true recipes. Erickaβs love for bringing people together was inspired by Dottie, and sheβs used that guiding principle to build an expansive career in the field of mindfulness as a community organizer, event producer and literary agent, specifically developing projects and platforms that help amplify the voices and causes of people of color.
Chris and Ericka want Dottieβs Market to be a gathering place for the Savannah community, honoring the past, present and future through craftsmanship, quality ingredients, employee empowerment and customer care while following in the footsteps of their grandmothers and ancestors. They know what itβs like to walk into a space and think, βIs this place for me? Am I welcome here?β And at Dottieβs the answer is, βYes. You are welcome here. All are welcome here.β Not only is this an important social mission. Itβs good for business.
Itβs Dottieβs way.

Cafe + Market
Braided into the graceful lines of Savannahβs Historic District, Dottieβs Market is a spacious, light-filled cafe where youβll be greeted by the smell of breads and pastries baking in the oven, coffee brewed to order, hot breakfast plates, and appetizing sandwiches featuring house-cured charcuterie, fall-off-the-bone-meats and fresh-off-the-boat seafood. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, we invite you to duck out of the Broughton Street bustle for a moment of calm at the Chefβs Counter, or a good conversation with an old friend over a filling combination of sandwiches, salads, bowls and desserts.
In the market weβll keep a tasty assortment of grab-and-go items for a quick lunch break or a leisurely picnic, in addition to our favorite craft beers, natural wines, ready-made cocktails, pickles, preserves and more. And perhaps youβll discover a unique, handmade gift from one of our local artisans to brighten your journey onward.
Whether youβre stopping by or settling in, at Dottieβs we hope to welcome you with flavorful food and quality wares that celebrate the bounty of the Lowcountry while uplifting our regional growers and makers. Weβre here to share our traditions and techniques with you, recipes that have been lovingly passed down through generations of grandmothers who understood the value of real food, made real good.
We look forward to seeing you, wherever you are in your day.
